Lecture
Lectures will include interpretations of assigned texts, as well as historical and
biographical contexts. You are expected to attend every lecture, pay attention,
and take notes.
You will need to have completed the assigned reading before each class day. Always bring
to class the texts we are studying, since you will be asked to refer to specific passages
and pages.
Please arrive at lecture promptly and sit quietly (unless called upon to speak) until
class is dismissed. Do not disturb those around you with talking or newspaper reading/
internet browsing. Turn off all phones before lecture begins.
Attendance
Attendance at lecture and at section is mandatory. Your active participation, especially
in section, is essential for your success and the success of this class. In the event of a
third section absence, your final course grade will drop one letter grade. More than 3
absences from section will result in a failing grade for the course. If you know that you
cannot make class for any reason, notify your instructor in advance to discuss how you will
make up the missed material. Religious obligations are exempt.
Writing Assignments
You will write one 1-2 page ungraded response essay and two papers for this course
(3-5 pages and 5-7 pages). There will also be other writing assignments and exercises.
Late Policy
All assignments are due at the beginning of section on the day specified. Late papers
will be marked down one grade (e.g. B to BC) for every calendar day they are past due.
Papers not submitted within one week of the due date will automatically fail. No extensions.
